My second grader’s teacher told him that he should write a “Why?” question after every reading assignment, to help promote comprehension.  I thought…”what a good idea”.  So, here are some of my “Why questions?”

  1. Why is it that investors are urged to “invest for the long haul” when so many companies base their business strategy on short-term gains?

2.   Why are there still devotee’s of “Trickle-down” economics when it is clear that

the big companies are spending every spare dime moving jobs overseas, and very

little, if any, will “trickle down” here in America?

  1.  Why does “support the troops” have to mean thinking it’s a good idea to send them to Iraq to get shot at?

      4.     Why doesn’t “support the troops” mean maintaining or increasing the levels of

“death benefits” given to their families when they are killed (rather than cutting

them), maintaining or increasing the funding of the VA to take care of the

wounded (rather than cutting them), making sure that they hit the ground with

enough modern equipment in good repair to do the jobs they are sent to do,

making sure that there are enough of them to do the job as safely as possible,

making sure they get adequate R&R and don’t have to be “boots on the ground”

for as much as a year longer than we told them to expect, and paying them more

than ½ or 1/3 what we are paying civilian contractors to do the same jobs, and

also giving their remains a proper and dignified reception, as has been done in

past wars…rather than sneaking them in the back door and pretending they don’t

exist?  If you want to get an idea of the kinds of issues facing our troops, go to

this website.  You will hear a variety of experiences and impressions on the war

from real people who have been/are there.

  1. Why do so many hard-working rich people who work one 60 hours-a-week job think that they are more hard-working than a poor person who works 3 20-hours-a-week jobs or 2 30-hours-a-week jobs?

  1. Why do so many people in this country rabidly support one Amendment, and yet try so hard to curtail another?  (Such as NRA members who want to ban certain kinds of speech, or ACLU members who want to ban guns…if you’re like me, you’ve know a handful of each, and as a mouthy, opinionated hunter who thinks that there are some people who just shouldn’t own handguns, and doesn’t understand why anyone would want an assault rifle, thinks some people would be better off if they talked less and listened more, and doesn't get the appeal of porn...I get on all their nerves.)

So that’s just a few of my “why” questions…maybe some of you have some “why questions” of your own?
