Ann Coulter’s at it again.
This time, she’s defending “Jeff Gannon”, first, by claiming that “liberals” are after Gannon because they are hypocrites who hate gay people. That, she claims, is their only reason.
It’s not because he had a secret life that could have made him a security risk. It’s not because he got daily access to the White House through gaming the use of day passes to the White House and turning it into a revolving daily pass equal to the advantages given reporters with “hard passes”…and there is public suspicion that he was only able to do so with the help of someone within the administration. It couldn’t possibly be because he has been found to be very active in other partisan endeavors and on the payroll of at least one other partisan organization at the time he was supposed to be a member of the “independent press”.
Nope, Ann Coulter will tell you; it’s just because he’s gay. And nobody hates a gay like liberals. Or maybe her point is that we only hate conservative gays. I don’t know…it’s so hard to tell.
Also, Coulter dismisses the “assumed name” charge by reporting that Gary Hart, Bill Clinton, and John Kerry all ran for the presidency under “invented names”.
Now, what she says is true…from a certain point of view. It is true that all three have names “invented” by someone. Of the three, only Gary Hart (nee Hartpence) actually “invented” his own name. He changed it legally in 1961 for reasons unknown. I’ll grant that one, as he actually changed it himself. Still, a lot of decent people do that and there’s no indication that it was for unsavory reasons. The fact that he did plenty of unsavory stuff under the new name is unfortunate.
Bill Clinton was, indeed, born William Jefferson Blythe. While still a very young child, he was adopted by his stepfather, and given his stepfather’s family name: Clinton. So, if you are adopted, beware. Ann Coulter might accuse you of living under an “invented name”…and equate you with a male prostitute trying to escape his sordid past as a hooker, in order to create a sordid future as a partisan hack.
John Kerry was born John Kerry. His name was “invented” by his grandfather. John Kerry’s grandfather was born Fritz Kohn, and changed it to Fred Kerry when he converted to Catholicism.
So, if you are one of the thousands of Americans whose ancestors changed their name when immigrating to this country, or who’s name was misspelled or mangled by careless immigration clerks…look out! You are living under and “invented name”. You should not run for President (at least not as a Democrat) and you are the moral equivalent of Jeff Gannon or James Gukert…or whatever his name is.
Coulter also asserts that it is hypocrisy to pillory “Jeff Gannon” for using an assumed name when so many other reporters and news anchors work under “invented names”. Of course, she completely ignores a salient point; which is that they are not using assumed names to cover up a sordid and potentially compromising double life as prostitutes. Or at least, I don’t think they are. As one of her examples is Larry King…I’d really, really rather not know.
