How to make the world a better place.

I got the following forwarded to me in an e-mail from an older relative. All I can think of when I read it, is that the person who wrote it thinks that the way to get a better world is to beat our children, teach them that the only reason to participate in community events is to avoid coercive violence, and that they have no choice in when an how to exercise generosity, but must exercise it not out of the goodness of their hearts, but at the end of a belt-strap...and that somehow, this will make them immune to the lure of drugs.

Unfortuanly, my children are doomed to end up as skid-row drug feinds because of my selfish obsession with teaching them to reason, encouraging them to think of others and exercise their empathy, and allowing them to explore the rewards of altruism on their own terms. Oh, and rely on proper socialization to teach them not to casually engage in profanity.

'course...I had the upbringing described below...and I turned out OK...right? Right?

The other day, someone at a store in our town read that a Methamphetamine lab

Had been found in an old farmhouse in the adjoining county.
He asked me a rhetorical question.
"Why didn't we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up?"
I replied, I did have a drug problem when I was young:
I was drug to church on Sunday morning.
I was drug to weddings and funerals.
I was drug to family reunions and community
socials---no matter the weather.
I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults.
I was also drug to the woodshed when I
disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report
card, did not speak with respect to others, spoke ill of the teacher or the
Preacher or if I didn't put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me.
I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my
mouth washed out with soap, if I uttered a profanity,
I was drug out to pull weeds in mom's garden
and flower beds or cockleburs out of dad's lawn or fields.
I was drug to the homes of family, friends,
and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one---
to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some firewood; and

if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for

this kindness, she would have drug me back to the woodshed.

Those drugs are still in my veins and they affect my
behavior in everything I do, say, or think. They are
stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin; and,
If
today's children had this kind of drug problem,
America would be a better place.

1. Once I start reading a book, I HAVE to finish it, no matter how bad it is. It's a compulsion that will not let me rest. I have one or two books that I never finished. Years later, I still own them, and the book markers are still in them. :-) I will have no peace until they are done.

2. I hated being pregnant, and the Lamasse classes were like torture to me, listening to everyone talk about how wonderful it was, and thinking there must be something wrong with me that I didn't like being sick and sweaty and having poor digestion, back and knee pain, and chronic headaches.

3. When I was pregnant, the smell of broccoli was so repellant to me that I found grocery stores almost unbearable.

4. My kids call me "Darth Mom".

5. I was very low in my High school class rankings, but in the 97th percentile on the SATs.

6. I didn't learn to read until 3rd grade.

7. Once I start watching a movie, I have to finish it, no matter how bad it is. Except for "Me, Myself and Irene". I never looked back.

8. I'm a lame fangirl for Dr. Daniel Jackson.

9. I can't stand the sensation of stepping on paper in stocking feet. It makes my skin crawl.

10. When I was a kid, we used to love to play "tag" with BB guns (rubber BB's) and bottle rockets. I'm afraid to even say out loud the different ways we played with fire.

I've been given permission by the ~~the Germans~~ ...~~a German~~ ... an American living in Germany to boost Eden Prairie "One of America's ten best places to live" as the eventual new home-town of a young New York couple.

Danny and Nina are going to let people vote on where they will live for the next year.

Due to the efforts of a German blogger, this young couple looks to be sent to Plano, TX. This is terrible, since Danny says he likes swimming and skiboarding. He wants snow and water. That's Minnesota, baby. Nina wants bike trails, and you just can't beat Minnesota for bike trails. Nina wants theaters and culture. You can't hardly spit without hitting a theater or museum in the Twin Cities metro area.

1. What did you do in 2005 that you'd never done before?

Choreographed all of the violence and mayhem for a feature length film.
Tested for and earned my black sash in Kung Fu.
Attempted a 25K race
Wait! How could I forget!?!? I went on a Swamp Walk. Never done that before.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
No resolutions for me. I’ve enough guilt and remorse without setting myself up for failure. You either do it, or you don’t. Either way, “resolving” to do it is neither here nor there.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope, but a dear good friend FINALLY got pregnant after much disappointment, surgery and prayer. So, ask again next year.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No. Regrettably, someone I was very much looking forward to knowing did.
5. What countries did you visit?
Great Britain , Canada
6. What would you like to have in 2006 that you lacked in 2005?

The ability to let things go.
A second degree black sash.
More time just hanging out and enjoying the cool people in my life.

Dates don’t exactly stay etched in my memory. They just don’t. I will remember many things from this year…just not necessarily when that they happened this year, or what particular order they happened in.

Getting my black sash.

I prefer not to think of anything I do or don’t do as a failure. There are opportunities I’ve missed, but have tried to learn from:

Having difficulty seeing when to back off and when to step in, where my boys are concerned.
Opportunities I missed to spend more time with my kids.
Focusing too much on things that I have no power or control over.
