More from Steve Cornell:

An atheist must also suppress all notions of morality. He is not able to declare any quality to be morally superior to another. Such admissions require an absolute standard of goodness and duty. Without this, there is no basis for an atheist to declare peace better than war or love better than hate. These are simply alternative choices without moral superiority. The atheist is stuck believing that morality has no claim on you or anyone else.

Steve Cornell must suppress all notions of himself as a mentally healthy individual.  He must believe that his natural state is the state of a sociopath and without God, he would be unable to tell that murdering someone is wrong, or that loving is better than hating.

If he wasn’t a Christian, he could just go and pick a person off the street and strangle them to death, look into their eyes as they died, and then go to the local deli and order a pastrami sandwich with mayo and eat it like nothing had ever happened, because he wouldn’t know that eating pastrami with mayo is wrong.

Steve Cornell would not be able to tell that hugging a child and reading her a story and tucking her in at night and making sure her night-light is on so she won’t be scared is better than smacking her across the face, cursing at her and locking her in a broom closet without supper.

It’s a good thing that we have a clear moral guide like God’s word (the Bible) to tell us that we should kill our daughters out of gratitude for a military victory, stone our sons if they misbehave, slaughter entire nations of people just because they are living where we want to live, and give our daughters to a crowd of angry men to save ourselves and our male guests (through God’s word, we know that it is better for women to be raped than for men to be raped).

It’s wonderful that we have clear moral Christian voices that lets us know that it is better to go with clear moral choices like abstinence-only sex education, or we might be fooled into using cloudy morality to choose policy positions that actually do a better job of preventing unwanted pregnancy, and the spread of disease.

Those poor Atheists, stuck with evaluating the actual results and outcomes of different approaches to problem solving, and then having to rely on human reason to decide what is best.

They would be so much happier if they could just see that it doesn’t matter what the outcomes are as long as your actions fit some arbitrary code laid down in the Bronze and Iron Ages by people whose survival depended on a rigid patriarchal structure, absolute social cohesiveness, and rampant reproduction.
