"Real meaning of life...stuff" - Daniel Jackson

The evening began with Adventure Boy’s friends trickling into our house.  I had pizzas in the oven already, a batch of cookie dough batter ready in the fridge, a gallon jug of popcorn ready to pop, a grocery bag full of chips and an ice cream cake in the freezer.

Adventure Boy’s friends are great.  There’s HorrorGeek,  Kung Fu friend who loves gory horror flicks, the more splash the better.  He and Pretzel Boy (likes to eat pretzels) showed up first, driven by HorrorGeek’s mom.

Our friends Avindair and Geekgoddess showed up and dropped off MonkeyBoy, and he was swiftly followed by DrowElfAssassin  and ClericKid.

Seeker came later, a little put out that he could not stay the night, but would instead have to be picked up early.

Our party began with HorrorGeek and DarkElfAssassin having a wrestling match over a can of Pepsi.  It got out of hand.  Dark Elf Assassin took two hit points of damage.  HorrorGeek tried to pretend he hadn’t got out of control.  Pretzel Boy and Monkey Boy didn’t let him get away with it.  They just said “dude, you brutalized him” and “Yeah, you did.”  Quietly, assertively, and without malice.  Horror Boy apologized…DrowElfAssassin forgave.  All was well in teenage boy land.

They all gathered up their lightsabers and blaster rifles to go outside and terrorize the neighborhood, and great fun was had by all.  Adventure Boy hit Grasshopper in the eye with a snowball.  One hit point of damage.  Apology, forgiveness…all was well once again.

Then, it was time for video games, pizza, chips, baby carrots and ice cream cake.  Happy happy joy joy.  The sound of dying foes and happy children wafted up the stairwell as I took out the cookie dough and baked fresh cookies for the tireless warriors.

Pretzel Boy’s little sister had to come over for a little while so her parents could go out for the evening.  We ate cookies and talked about the book she’s writing.  It’s pretty exciting.  There’s a bear attack in a Girl Scout camp.  My kind of story.

Anyway, time passes.  Seeker gets picked up and I tell the boys that it’s time to quiet down and watch a movie.  They all settled, and all was quiet for about two hours…

When I was awakened by the news that ClericKid was throwing up.  Wow.  Was THAT an understatement…

Two pillows, three sleeping bags, one futon cushion, and the carpeting of two downstairs rooms took three hit points each.

So here I am at three in the morning, laundering sleeping bags and pillows.  I will steam clean the carpets tomorrow, and hopefully a thorough steam cleaning and a healthy dose of Nature’s Miracle can restore the futon to health.

Don’t you ever. EVER. Let anyone tell you that I don’t know how to throw a party.

hmmm...

I will file this away in the back of the brain for that day in the, sadly not too, distant future when the 5 and 3 year old have their friends over for a slumber party.

Only difference? I have daughters... not that I expect that to simplify things in any way... nope.

But my boss did give me one idea, since I live in the city. He mentioned that when they start dating I should bury the bodies vertically so as to save space in the back yard. :-)

But then you have to dig the holes so much deeper. :-)

Just got a call from the mother of the sick boy....he has strep. :-( Poor kid. I think I've called all the parents now and warned them this could be coming.

It's really sad that you thought MY parents were cool when Jon and I were kids... how they could've seemed sane to you is way beyond me!

P.S. If at one time they really were normal and sane, it's worn off.

Benjamin,

I was comparing them to MY parents. :-)

How did their visit with Jon go? How is Amanda doing?

Teresa,

I guess compared to your parents, I got off easy.

Anyhow, their visit with Jon went well. I really wish I would've been able to go, although I did get to talk to him on the phone before he left. if you want to see some pictures of Jon and his unit there's a website www.sixty-six.org , I think it's the website of one of Jon's COs.

Ben,

I guess like most parents, they meant well. But they WERE awfully strict and could really use language to tear a person down.

I've got it bookmarked. :-)

I think that tattoo he got is just awful. :-)
