CNN has been blasting on and on all morning about the Marines killed in Falluja...mostly focusing on how many of them might or might not be female.

Show of hands...

How many people think a Marine is a Marine is a Marine?

How many think it's insulting to Marines, women, and our millitary's casualties to make such a big deal about how many of them might or might not be women?

The're there, they're trained, they're volunteers, and they are doing their job, and they are getting killed.  Don't make their deaths into socio-political footballs.

Maybe pressing the reality of women dying in combat under the current  rules barring them from “combat roles” is one way to open up careers for women in the millitary...but I think respect should be the watchword when it comes to casualties of our service men and women.

There are other ways to advance the cause of women in the millitary

Ive studied military history a bit in my time with particular emphasis on the Marines and the spc ops guy. Last time I checked, the uniforms did not come in blue for boys and pink for girls. Ive never knwon and female Marines to my knowledge but Ive known a fair number of female vets from other branches and, in my experience, while they were terrific people, they tended to project an even more serious air of calm, quiet, no bullshit "I can take anything you throw at me and hand it back to you twisted into the balloon animal of your choice. And then Ill do the same to you if youve pissed me off enough."

So yeah, I think the words "slap" and "face" feature prominently in this nonsense.

I think this is another side to the 'gays in the Military' issue. Basically, when did having a dick and drooling over boobies make someone fit to be a soldier (or marine?)

Personally, I want the best people possible to be the ones out there fighting to defend our country, and I could give a damn about anything but their pure ability to kick ass as a qualification.

Anyone who has a problem with either women or homosexuals fighting is saying more about their own inability to remove their heads from their asses than they are about the combat ability of the people in question.

I may be biased in this regard, but I know when I was a soldier I was more interested in how well the person who stood beside me could hit a target with their rifle and thereby save my own ass when the time came than in what they have in their pants or what they do in their off time.

But then again, I'm a lot more rational than most soliders and almost all officers and/or politicans.
