I’m doing a 25k marathon on Sept. 11.

My friend Sue invited me, and I decided to do it.  Sept. 11 is her birthday…and things like birthdays are very important to her.  So I would guess she figured she’d rather be out of the house running her ass off than looking at the T.V. or out in public hearing about Sept. 11 and watching it turned into the bastard child of heartless media exploitation and opportunistic political grandstanding.

I decided that I would do it as a sort of birthday present to her…as this is the sort of thing she really digs for a birthday present…stuff that requires time and attention and involvement and stuff.  J

So I have signed up, and today we started training…I’m a person who runs…but I’m not a runner.  I’ll run a mile here or there…and I do five to seven miles almost daily on the elliptical jogger at the gym…but that’s not the same as being a runner…training, discipline, psychology, strategy…that stuff has been lacking from my running experience.  I run fairly frequently…but it’s when I feel like it, for as long as I feel like it.

This is different.  I’ve got a training schedule.  I’m going to have a new training diet, as low carb is not terribly appropriate for runners.  I’m still doing the South Beach, but I’m adding a much higher level of whole grains and fruit than they generally recommend.

And I refuse to feel guilty about the chocolate anymore.

I've had three people ask me if I'm thinking about signing up for the Twin Cities Marathon in October...26.2 miles?  uh uh.  No thanks.  Not with Diamond Nationals coming up that month and my history of getting injured right before tournaments.

Anyway, today Sue was feeling a little tightness and pain in her knees, so we kept it to an easy three miles…then I went and volunteered for a field trip at the second grader’s school (planting flowers at Staring Lake Park) and then I ran the three mile trail around Staring.  So, I’ve done six miles today, which Rocky says doesn’t count, because I had an hour and ½ break in between…but that’s easy for him to say…he didn’t do the running…so there.  J

More power to ya! I'm a wimp -- I only just discovered that I can do a 5k. I did a 2.5 mile walk for charity a couple of weeks ago, and going into it I had no idea what condition I would be in at the end. It had been so long since I'd done anything like that, I thought I might just crumple up into a heap. But I guess the powertraining (taking care of kids ages 2 and 4) kept me in shape, and at the end I was ready to walk a couple more miles!

Trees, you have always been my hero. Tell Rocky, from the girl who stopped after the first 3, that the extra 3 miles do too count!!! Be warned however, my knees feel better today, and I'm due for a 10 miler this weekend. ;)

P.S. Boy, do I need the stretch out a couple of my hip muscles today. Maybe going to Kung Fu last night on top of all that was a bridge too far...

Urgh. Running is the Devil's Instrument. Or is that the Army. Whatever, same thing. Running is like torture for me, and I hate it a great deal. Plus, the fact that the first time I ever ran more than about three blocks was with a Drill Sergeant on my ass making shall we say derogative statements about my running ability and likening me to microscopic lifeforms found in standing bodies of water did not make me more fond of it as a form of activity However, I do have tremendous appreciation for you and your dedication.

I've heard that most marathon runners can only handle about a dozen real marathons in their careers, because the stress it puts on the body is cumulative, so it's just as good you aren't planning on doing the TC Marathon when you have Diamond Nationals on the way. But I will say that the TC Marathon is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful routes of any American marathon, so if you got the bug to do it in the future, thsi would be a good one to do. Plus, it runs only a few blocks from home, so I could come out and cheer you on without much effort at all. I promise, I'll only throw confetti!

I ran the Fargo Marathon a few weeks ago, and there was this cute little old man who had run a marathon in all 50 states, plus DC and Canada (that is what his shirt said, I'm not sure where, exactly, in Canada). There is a 50 States Club that I hope to some day be a part of. With one marathon, I got two states out of the way (the Fargo Marathon course ran a little bit in Moorehead, as well). Anyway, the point is, you can run any number of marathons as you're crazy enough to do. :)
